HN Baracuda Hunter Extreme

Postby JohnnySweden on Sat May 05, 2012 8:54 am

I have for long been looking for a good performing pellet with excellent accuracy on longer ranges. The best one so far have been the Predator Pellets but theise are expensive and do not give good enough accuracy at 50 yards and beyond.

The last few days I have been testing a brand new pellet from HN, a variation on the classic Baracuda and this pellet surpasses all my expectations.

Its a little lighter then the original Baracuda but just as accurate (!) and will still output a solid 47 fpe, a drop of 3-4 fpe compared to Defiant Exterminator or the Baracuda in my FX Airguns Elite.

This is my latest target on measured 55 yards (50 meters) using the Hunter Extreme, all shots accounted for:

Conditions were good, but still not ideal, rifle rested solid.

Here in Sweden theise pellets retail at 69 SEK, to compare with Baracuda 60 SEK, Predator Pellets 95 SEK (150 pellets) or Defiant Exterminators 145 SEK (275 pellets). The HN pellets comes in tins of 200 pellets.

This turns out to be 0.34 SEK/Pellet (Hunter Extreme), 0.30 SEK/Pellet (Baracuda), 0.63 SEK/Pellet (Predator) and 0.53 SEK/Pellet (Exterminator).

The refence pellet No 1 - JSB Exact King is 150 SEK (350 Pellets) making 0.43 SEK/Pellet.

Just as an aside, what do you consider "good performing" (energy and penetration downrange, I'd say, not at the muzzle) and "excellent accuracy"?. Personally, I'd expect little less than a ragged hole from an "excellent accurate" pellet at 50m, especially from only five shots. The third and fourth group get close to it, but the others...nah.

Excellent accuracy is compared to similar pellets, ie Crow Magnum, Predator Pellets, RWS HollowPoint and so on....

Aaah, yeah, well, then they're not so bad I guess :) I generally avoid using those funky designed pellets. I guess they're nice for energy transfer on target but you'll have to hit it first :)

Besides, I don't hunt anyways.

Try using the Baracuda 21 grain, pellets.
I use them for rabbit culling and find them extremely accurate over distance ( the below group of 12 is at 36 meters) having enough mass to comfortably kill a rabbit at 75m
